JeOS Virtualization
LiveTime has developed a highly
optimized operating system
specifically for the delivery of
Java applications in virtual
environments such as VMware.
This concept is often referred
to as JeOS (Just Enough
Operating System) and pronounced
Juice.
Based around the latest Linux
kernel (2.6 series), ext3 file
system and VMware tools, the
operating system includes a
complete open source application
stack. The system includes Java
1.6, Apache 2.2 web server,
Tomcat 6.0 and PostgreSQL 8.2.

With LiveTime's JeOS highly
tuned for LiveTime Service
Manager and Help Desk
applications, we can achieve
much higher performance than a
general purpose operating system
containing hundeds of libraries
and tools that are not needed.
Since the JeOS has been
specifically designed as an
application server all unwanted
tools and libraries have been
removed. Consequently, the
footprint is around 400 MB with
LiveTime installed and under 300
MB as a core application server
operating system. This makes it
possible to run many virtualized
environments on one machine for
different purposes. As an
example you can run LiveTime for
testing, training and production
all on one machine with
different virtual IP addresses.
Service and SaaS providers can
leverage this technology to
deploy multiple instances of
LiveTime for each customer on
the same machine in seconds with
no configuration changes. All
management can be performed
using standard virtual machine
management tools.
Future Developments
