Theory of Operations
Northern Storage
Assistant's core operations center on monitoring for different types of
events and performing different types of actions when event parameters
are met.
A typical Assistant might include a single, perhaps time related event
and a single action, moving a file for instance. The operations involved
in this Assistant include monitoring system time, retrieving file
property information and the actual moving of the file. These operations
are not advanced or complex in any way, it is the automation of these
operations that forms the value added by Northern Storage Assistant.
In more advanced Assistants, the operations are equally 'standard' but
the scheduling, queueing and interaction of these operations can be very
precisely engineered.
Boolean logic [AND/OR/NOT] is used to establish and tune links between
multiple events. Create an Assistant that depends on several events
being true but one specific event being false, or that any one of a
group of three events are true, for instance.
A system of action logic is used to create dependancies bewteen multiple
actions and impose fault tolerance within the Assistant; providing a
different result if a specific action fails or skipping an action if it
cannot be performed after three attempts, for instance.
Interoperability
Northern Storage Assistant supports a number of standards in order to
offer extended integration possibilities.
- All configuration information is stored in XML file format, an
open standard that offers significant integration possibilities.
- Northern Storage Assistant's Execute Program Action can trigger
any application; allowing an Assistant to interact with
defragmentation, compression or backup systems for example.
- Events can be monitored and Actions carried out across
non-permanent connections using RAS, RRAS and VPN standards.
- Support for HTTP and FTP allows an Assistant to upload or
download files using these protocols.
Requirements
- Windows ® 2000 Server or higher
