Theory of Operations
Northern Storage Portal creates personal web pages that help end-users
manage their storage use.
Typically, end-users receive an e-mail notification when they reach a
certain usage threshold in their home share. This notification is
generated by Northern Quota Server. The e-mail includes an invitation to
visit their Storage Portal pages and a link to provide access. These
pages help them to manage the content of their home share and offer the
possibility to increase their storage quota.
When the end-users visit their individual Storage Portal pages, they get
suggestions for files that should be considered for deletion. The
ActiveX controls on their Storage Portal pages perform a scan of their
home directory and display various top ten lists of files; oldest,
largest, etc.
If a user clicks the 'Request Additional Space' button in their Storage
Portal, the ActiveX control connects to the specified Storage Portal
server and sends a request. The Storage Portal server checks the request
against available Grace limit rules and takes the appropriate action. If
instructed to do so, it returns a notification to the end-user. These
notifications are:
"Your request has been accepted",
"Your request has been denied" and
"Your request has been queued pending administrator decision".
Interoperability
Northern Storage Portal stands out from
the other components of Northern Storage Suite. Due to its function, it
is designed to be used in conjunction with Northern Quota Server.
Storage quotas show a user how much storage they are using in comparison
to what your storage policy determines to be a safe upper limit. It is
this information that is interesting for users when they are managing
their own storage use, and it is this information that Northern Storage
Portal provides and acts upon.
