From a user-friendly interface, Storage Reporter displays aggregate data
regarding usage and content of servers and volumes. In addition, Storage
Reporter features the power to monitor growth trends, host, server and
volume content.
I would like to be able to check the largest files
on a certain volume…
Northern Storage Reporter enables you to drill-down to check the largest
or oldest files on specific servers or volumes. It provides detailed
information about the type of content present, including file type and
owner.
My boss wants me to provide her with weekly
storage reports…
Storage Reporter offers a series of pre-configured reports that can be
scheduled to run at intervals or immediately. These reports can display
information collected from multiple servers or the entire network.
Evaluation Guide
INTRODUCTION
This document describes how you can explore some of the many features of
Northern Storage Reporter.
EXPLORING NORTHERN STORAGE REPORTER
The objective of any evaluation is to get a fairly decent idea of the
key features of the software one is considering to invest in. To that
end Northern has devised this paper, which will try to help you in your
exploration of the software Northern Storage Reporter.
- Perform a full server installation under the Evaluation license
agreement. Make sure that you install MSDE (the demo database).
- After you have completed the installation, choose Start >
Programs > NORTHERN > Storage Suite > Storage Reporter. The Overview
page appears (in Internet Explorer).
- Inspect the principal views of Northern Storage Reporter by
clicking the buttons: HOSTS, USERS, FILE TYPES, REPORTS.
PRINCIPAL PAGES
- OVERVIEW PAGE - presents general usage statistics for the entire
network
HOSTS PAGE - presents usage information per server/host
- USERS PAGE - presents usage information per user
- FILE TYPES PAGE - presents usage information per file type
(these are also grouped in File type groups)
- REPORTS PAGE - allows you to schedule advanced reports. In the
dummy database you are not able to schedule any of these reports. If
you want to evaluate this particular you should perform a regular
configuration of Storage Reporter as detailed in the User Guide.
FRAMES AND ACTIVEX CONTROLS
Northern Storage Reporter’s User Interface is placed inside Internet
Explorer. The focus is on different statistical data that are organized
in different frames. These frames are ActiveX Controls and are therefore
dynamic. That is, you can change the way the content of the frame looks.
The borders and the top headings are based on HTML, which makes them
static and unchangeable.
You can double-click any item shown in the frame. This will open this
item or as we call it “drill-down” to that item. This means that you can
double-click a Host Group to see the Hosts in that group and the
double-click one of the Hosts to see its volumes, etc.
The frames have two buttons in their top-right corner. The first one is
an expand button which allows the controls to be enlarged to enable
closer examination. The second button is an information button, which
explains what is shown in the frame and how you can manipulate the data
in it.
In general you can, by right-clicking the frame, affect at least one of
the following changes to the data of any given frame:
- View > Pie chart. Change the data shown into a pie chart.
- View > Column chart. Change the data shown into a column chart.
- View > List. Change the data shown into a list.
- View > List. Change the data shown into icons.
- Data > Count. Will sort items, or show items [e.g. files]
according to their number.
- Data > Size. Will sort, or show items according to their size.
- Data > Average Size. Will show the average size of items [e.g.
files].
- Rounding. Will round down to the closest whole number.
- Hide selected. Recalculates the statistics without showing the
hidden data.
- Hide non-selected. Hides all items that are not highlighted and
recalculates the statistics.
- Show all.
TIPS!
When exploring Northern Storage Reporter you can go to File Types page
to find usage information per File Type Groups like Music (MP3s), Movies
(AVIs, MPEGs, etc), or Office (DOCs, XLSs, etc).
Or, you can go to Users page to see which user consumes the most storage
space, and drill down to an individual user to see where he or she
stores data.
Or, you can go to the Host or Volume page to see how it is performing.
(I/O performance counters).
