Theory of Operations
Storage Reporter collects
usage and file system data, storing it in a database and then presenting
usage analyses derived from this data in the form of reports. The
client, presented in Internet Explorer, displays instant reports about
general usage patterns on different levels of your network. This
information is shown using ActiveX controls, comprising a series of HTML
pages.
The principal pages are Overview, Hosts, Users and File Types, these
pages present usage information about the network as a whole, the
different hosts [servers, NAS, SAN] in your network, the users in your
network and the content of your storage resources.
To be able to present usage statistics, Storage Reporter must collect
file system information. This is done by scanning the storage media that
contain the files/data and by writing the collected usage information to
an MS SQL database. File system scans are performed by a file scanning
engine. This scanning engine is schedulable in order not to interfere
with daily business operations.
Northern Storage Reporter also includes functionality enabling you to
quickly clean up its database. History data is very useful in growth
projections and trending, but you are given the choice as to how much
history data you wish to retain.
As a result of Storage Reporter's client being displayed from within
Internet Explorer, it is possible to access this interface from any
machine in your network. In order to offer both flexibility and
security, you must have sufficient privileges to access the share where
Northern Storage Reporter is installed.
ActiveX controls are dynamic whereas HTML is static. The ActiveX
controls in Storage Reporter allow for interactive manipulation of the
usage statistics presented, the Administrator can recalculate, resort
and reshape the statistics in the client.
Interoperability
Northern Storage Reporter supports a number of standards in order to
offer extended integration possibilities.
- All data is stored in open MS SQL tables.
- Data can also be stored in an MSDE database, if preferred.
- All configuration information is stored in open XML file format.
- All data displayed in Storage Reporter's many pages and reports
