Within a corporate network, tape backups
provide excellent protection, but for servers outside of this environment,
such as web servers co-located with an internet service provider, backups
are either not available, or are an expensive addition to a hosting plan.
ServerAssist can back up file based data
or any OLE DB data source, moving it off the server either by transferring
it to a separate FTP server, or sending it as an e-mail attachment to an
e-mail address. Backups can be scheduled to run at a set time in the day,
or every few hours for more volatile data.
When backing up an OLE DB data source, the data is extracted and copied to
an Access 2000 database. The structure of the tables in the data source is
detected automatically, and corresponding tables are created in the Access
database before being populated with the data from the OLE DB data source.
The resultant database can then be compressed, if required, before being
transferred off the server. The data source does not have to be taken
offline to carry out the backup.
When backing up file based data, ServerAssist can either backup all files
in a folder, or only those that have changed since the last backup. These
files can also be compressed before transfer.
In all cases, the backed up data can be time stamped to uniquely identify
any single backup.
